EUROPE, 1925. The continent still licks its wounds from the devastating war that raged across it a few years before. Meanwhile, in London, an ageing professor has uncovered the clues to the whereabouts of pieces of an ancient statue, all but forgotten by history. When his investigations lead him to fear for his life, he enlists the aid of an unlikely group of allies; a retired colonel, a secretive academic, a magician s wife, and a Yorkshire matriarch with her reluctant assistant. Together they will journey across Europe to recover the long-lost statue. They will travel in style, on the most luxurious train the world has ever seen. Unbeknownst to them, however, their activities have already attracted the attention of a sinister cult, desperate to acquire the artefact for their own dark purposes, and now a terrible creature, trapped for centuries, senses that the opportunity for revenge has come at last... THE EXPRESS DIARIES is a tale of a journey into darkness and horror on the world's most famous train.

An absorbing read. I got off to a bit of a slow start, but it soon had me hooked on what would happen next as the characters charged headlong across Europe. A very interesting way to utilize the source material. Something I may try myself in one of my just writing for the fun of it ventures. I especially like the foot notes, informative about the time and place, but not required to understand the story. I would suggest the author would have improved the story with a bit more 'atmospherics' to place one in the year 1925. And maybe I'm just a calloused old Lovecraftian warhorse, but the horrors didn't really horrify me until the last monster, which was quite horrifying. This is hard to describe as the horrible facts were there, but they didn't quite move me to horror.Excellent proof-reading, definitely of professional quality, unlike so many, many Kindle atrocities. Illustrations were pretty much illegible, but that is a Kindle 'feature', not the fault of the author or the illustrator.
Don't be put off by my snarking, this is good stuff and well worth buying. In fact, I have just purchased another of this author's books.

The Express Diaries eBook Nick Marsh Eric M Smith Paul Maclean Reviews
Far fetched escapist fare.
This was an intesnesly enjoyable novel that I reccommend to anyone who likes the mysteries of the Cthulhu Mythos and a truly wonderful cast of characters. Not being overly familar with the original campaign, i enjoyed the twists and turns the tale provided.
Great old time type mystery. Romantic setting with enough drama to avoid being corny. Kept you guessing till the end.
This is a fun and fascinating period piece, not so much something H.P. Lovecraft himself might have written as what you might have gotten if Clark Ashton Smith had written a Bram Stoker pastiche. The narrative is largely in the form of diary entries, which normally leads to rather slow pacing, but the plot twists its way to the thrilling climax with gusto without sacrificing the excellent characterization.
Not surprisingly to anyone familiar with the role-playing adventure this is based on, "The Express Diaries" is more adventure than horror - although the moments of true horror are quite disturbing and/or disgusting. Much of the story is tinged with a slight air of the surreal. There's a fair bit of humor as well, though not quite as much as in the original source material.
As I said, this is based on a role-playing adventure. Specifically, this is based on the classic scenario "Horror on the Orient Express" for Call of Cthulhu, as played by the Bradford Players in 2008. The audio of their sessions is available at [...] and is definitely worth a listen. The novel makes some changes from the game, but a surprising amount of what made the game so entertaining makes it into the book in some form. Marsh nails the characters' voices, and the whole thing really feels like it could have been written in character by the Bradford Players.
The version is almost free of the quirks and glitches that plague most books. My one problem with reading it on my was the table of contents, which contains nothing but a list of numbers, each of which takes the reader to a footnote. Otherwise, this was a stellar e-book of a terrific adventure yarn!
A very enjoyable, fast paced but scary read. Nick Marsh has really captured the feel of Lovecraft. The book was suspenseful yet terrifying with believable characters who really brought the proper English mind set to the forefront of the 20's. Highly recommended.
A fun and interesting read for HLL fans. The characters are fairly well developed considering the book was developed from the famous Call of Cthulhu game. the action is constant and well described. Like all books and films developed from a game there is a slight feeling of "being led through the dungeons". However, that is a minor flaw that is is very pervasive in the media at the moment.
It was great fun and I recommend it!
"The Express Diaries" is a well written fun-tastic ride into adventure and terror. Much like the luxurious locomotive in the story this book picks up a head of steam and pulls the reader rapidly along page by page to it's exciting climax.
Nick Marsh has a done a masterful job of turning one of my favorite RPG adventure games into a wonderful fast paced novel. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's universe, The Call of Cthulhu roll playing game or 1920's era adventure stories.
I'd also love to have an audio book version read by the original players of the game, the wonderful and talented Bradford Players of yog-sothoth.com
